Master Oral and Written English with Confidence
Certificate in English as a Second
Language (ESL)
The
ESL Certificate Program is a five-level modular classes offered at
Messiah’s School of Professional Studies. It is divided into five
modules where each level includes integrated, content-based instruction in
listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and
pronunciation. For purposes of mastery and retention, one to three skills
are emphasized in each module. All levels give importance to oral communication
tasks through a comprehensive study of grammar and vocabulary to facilitate
quick acquisition of the English Language. Students who enter the program
at the beginning level must move progressively to the advanced level.
Applicants will undergo an oral interview and take an exam for
placement. They will also answer an ESP questionnaire so that only topics
according to their needs are studied and discussed in class. At the end of
five weeks, students are tested on their proficiency level for each
module. Promotion to the next level is based on a combination of
three factors: grades, teacher recommendations, and test score.
